It was the birthplace of the artist, David Roberts (1796-1864), who worked as a scene painter at Edinburgh's Theatre Royal and London's Covent Garden. In 1830, he was appointed President of the Society of British Artists. During the following decade he toured the Far East, producing a celebrated series of paintings of Egyptian scenes and antiquities. David Roberts was a Commissioner of the Great Exhibition of Industry and Arts in 1851. A plaque on the wall of the house celebrates his birthplace. In 2011 Duncan’s Land was completely renovated with a new kitchen, new furniture, new carpets and repainted throughout. Click here for more history of Duncan's Land and David Roberts. |
